Single-phase designs are usually constructed with stranded hollow-core conductors enclosed within a factory-extruded metal sheath, enabling insulating and cooling oil to flow longitudinally through the conductor. Single-conductor LPOF cables are used when larger cables pose an installation problem or when a fourth conductor is desirable as a spare phase. LPOF cables are available in both single-conductor and three-conductor configurations. Paper impregnated with low-viscosity oil and oil pumped through the cable at relatively low pressure provide the insulation medium.
